What to know before you go
The fort is compact, so avoid filling the day with too many separate vehicle stops. Walking, a long meal and one nearby beach usually create a better experience.
Recommended pace
One night is enough for the fort; two or three nights works better when adding beaches and nearby towns.
Best time and conditions
Galle is a year-round destination. The south-west coast is generally driest from December to April, but the fort remains worthwhile even during shorter rain periods.
Keep the arrival day light
Flight delays, luggage collection and road conditions can change the schedule. Avoid placing an important timed activity immediately after landing.
Check local conditions
Weather can differ greatly between Sri Lanka’s coast, hills and inland areas. Recheck the forecast and activity conditions close to your travel date.
Pack for the place
Carry sun protection, a light rain layer and suitable clothing for temples, walks or cooler evenings depending on the destination.
Reserve limited experiences early
Train seats, safari jeeps, boat trips and popular entry times may have limited availability during busy travel periods.
