Train
Best for: Scenic routes and low-cost intercity travel
Watch: Seats sell out; Badulla/upcountry services can change during repair periods
Low to mediumCompare trains, buses, tuk-tuks, ride-hailing, private taxis, chauffeur-driven cars, self-drive and domestic flights — with realistic price ranges, route tips and practical travel planning advice.
Train for Colombo–Galle and Kandy/Ella when the line is operating normally.
AC expressway buses for Colombo, Galle, Matara, Kandy and other big hubs.
Private taxi or chauffeur car for luggage, families, night arrivals and hotel-to-hotel transfers.
Chauffeur-driven car for multi-stop sightseeing, flexible timing and rural pickups.
Sri Lanka is small on the map, but travel times can be longer than expected because of traffic, hills, village roads and weather. For a smooth trip, combine transport types instead of depending on only one method.
The Kandy–Ella–Badulla line is one of Sri Lanka’s most famous train experiences, but storm-related recovery work has affected through services. Some sections have resumed at different times, while public reports have also noted curtailments around Rambukkana during repair periods.
Safe planning advice: before promising guests a Kandy–Ella, Ella–Badulla or Colombo–Badulla train, check the official schedule on the travel date and keep a backup car transfer plan.
The cheapest option is not always the best if you have luggage, children, late arrivals or multiple stops.
