Sri Lanka Train Ticket Prices: What to Expect

Official ticket prices depend on distance, train, route and class. The official schedule service is the safest place to check the final fare for your exact date and stations.

1st Class A/C

Higher comfort and reserved seating on selected long-distance trains. Good for Jaffna, Batticaloa and longer routes.

Observation

Limited scenic seats on selected routes. Very high demand, especially around popular hill-country journeys.

2nd Reserved

Usually the best tourist choice: reserved seat, strong value and better photography feel on scenic trains.

Unreserved

Lowest-cost option, but seat is not guaranteed. Better for short rides and flexible travelers.

Important: the June 2026 reopening notice does not publish fares or reservation classes for Train 1005/1006. Do not promise a fixed fare or reserved class until it is confirmed through the official portal or station.

Smart Tips Before You Ride

These small details help tourists avoid the common mistakes that lead to missed trains, no seats, or wrong expectations.

Book early for hill country

The Nanu Oya–Ella–Badulla section resumes from 20 June 2026, but availability and class details still need confirmation. For Kandy or Colombo connections, check the exact train separately.

Pack light for train days

Large luggage can be difficult during crowded travel. Keep valuables and passport with you.

Keep flight buffers

Sri Lanka train delays can happen. Avoid same-day tight train-to-international-flight planning.

Mix train + private car

For comfort, take the scenic train segment and use a private car for hotel pickup, luggage and remote areas.
