Practical planner
What to know before you go
A useful itinerary balances sightseeing with realistic travel time. Avoid judging a Sri Lankan route only by distance because road conditions and terrain can change the pace.
Recommended pace
Two nights is a good minimum; add another night when combining beach time, river safari and Galle.
Best time and conditions
The south-west coast is generally driest from December to April. Water activities and boat trips depend on local weather and river or sea conditions.
Keep the arrival day light
Flight delays, luggage collection and road conditions can change the schedule. Avoid placing an important timed activity immediately after landing.
Check local conditions
Weather can differ greatly between Sri Lanka’s coast, hills and inland areas. Recheck the forecast and activity conditions close to your travel date.
Pack for the place
Carry sun protection, a light rain layer and suitable clothing for temples, walks or cooler evenings depending on the destination.
Reserve limited experiences early
Train seats, safari jeeps, boat trips and popular entry times may have limited availability during busy travel periods.
