Clothing by region & season

Coast & lowlands (Colombo, Galle, Yala, Trinco)

Lightweight linen/cotton, shorts/sundresses, swimwear for beaches/pools. Evenings: long sleeves for mozzies.

Monsoon: SW coast wetter May–Sep; East wetter Oct–Jan.

Hill Country (Kandy, Ella, Nuwara Eliya/Hatton)

Layers: light fleece/sweater, long trousers. Rain possible anytime—carry a thin shell.

Nights can feel cool at altitude.

Temples & sacred sites (island-wide)

Cover shoulders & knees (all genders). Remove hats & shoes before entering; socks help on hot floors.

Avoid clothing with Buddha/deity images.

Sri Lanka has two monsoons—Yala (southwest, ~May–Sep) and Maha (northeast, ~Oct–Jan)—so there’s usually a dry side somewhere.
